5 Scenic Boat Tours in Scandinavia
(That I’ve Personally Tried and Loved)
From fjords to ferries, here’s how to explore the Nordics from the water—one unforgettable cruise at a time.

Not into cruises or huge cruise ships? Same here. I’m not a huge fan of multi-day cruises or huge ships—but I love getting out on the water for a few hours (or even overnight) when it’s part of a meaningful, scenic experience. These tours aren’t about buffets and bingo—they’re about seeing the Nordics in a different way.
Whether you’re weaving through quiet canals, watching whales breach in Arctic bays, or sailing past cliffs that drop straight into the sea, these boat tours give you a unique perspective—and often get you to places you just can’t reach on foot or by car. Each of these five tours is something I’ve personally done and loved, and if you’re craving a taste of the water without committing to a cruise ship lifestyle, these might be just what you’re looking for.
🐋 1. Whale Watching from Húsavík – Iceland
Often called the whale watching capital of Europe, Húsavík offers an unforgettable experience out on Skjálfandi Bay. This charming harbor town in North Iceland is the perfect jumping-off point to spot humpbacks, minke whales, dolphins, and sometimes even blue whales—all set against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks and sweeping Arctic skies. The guides here are incredibly knowledgeable and respectful of the environment, making the experience both educational and awe-inspiring. If you’re heading to North Iceland, this tour is an absolute must.
🚤 2. Stockholm Archipelago Tour by Boat – Sweden
This tour takes you into the vast Stockholm Archipelago—a dreamy maze of over 30,000 islands and islets. You’ll pass red boathouses, pine-covered islands, and old fishing villages that feel a world away from the capital city. What I love about this experience is how quickly the scenery shifts from urban to untouched. It’s perfect for travelers who want to blend city charm with natural serenity—without needing to go far or plan a full-day excursion. Book your Stockholm day cruise here.
⛴️ 3. Copenhagen Canal Tour (with Guide) – Denmark
Copenhagen was built for boat cruising, and this classic canal tour is a great way to get your bearings—or to rest your legs after a full day of exploring. Departing from the picturesque Nyhavn harbor, you’ll float past royal palaces, the Opera House, the Little Mermaid, and sleek modern neighborhoods. The live guide gives great context, but honestly, just sitting back and taking in the waterfront views is half the magic. A perfect intro to the city. Book your Canal Cruise here.
🛥️ 4. Lysefjord & Pulpit Rock Cruise – Norway (Stavanger)
This one is hands-down my favorite. I have also wanted to hike Pulpit Rock, which is a full day combined with the cruise out and back, but for those just wanting a taste of it by water- this one is for you. The Lysefjord cruise delivers jaw-dropping landscapes from start to finish—think sheer cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and of course, the iconic Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), towering above your boat. It’s surreal to pass beneath it and spot hikers as tiny dots on the cliff’s edge. The boat gets close to waterfalls, sea caves, and even wildlife when spotted. If you’re anywhere near Stavanger, this is a must.

🌙 5. Overnight Cruise: Helsinki to Stockholm (or Vice Versa) – Finland & Sweden
This isn’t just a boat ride—it’s a floating hotel, scenic journey, and clever travel hack all in one. The overnight cruise between Helsinki and Stockholm is a comfortable, efficient way to move between two Nordic capitals without losing a day to travel. Onboard, you’ll find restaurants, live music, shops, and sea views—plus cozy cabins where you can sleep as you sail.
Even better? This is just one of many overnight ferry options in the region. You can also cruise from Stockholm to Riga, Tallinn to Stockholm, or even Oslo to Copenhagen, depending on your route. Not the direction you are looking for? Dont worry - the ships sail back and forth, so each night there is one leaving in either direction. Tallinn and Stockholm also have a day sailing option as well. It’s a great way to turn transit into part of your adventure—and save on a night of accommodation while you’re at it. Book your Helsinki - Stockholm overnight cruise here.
